Luke Roberts is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, performance, photography and installation. Emerging in the late 1970s, his work collapses the personal and the political, drawing on Catholic iconography, rural autobiography, science fiction and queer cosmology.
Roberts’s Exorcism paintings, developed from the late 1980s into the early 1990s, are large‑scale mixed‑media works combining painting with assemblage and ritual gesture. Drawing on Catholic symbolism and personal memory, these works operate as acts of psychic release, confronting repression, identity and spiritual control through excess theatricality and material intensity.
Exorcism I and Exorcism III are on display on the Mezzanine Level at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Exorcism I can be viewed on Mezzanine Level.
