Gordon Bennett was one of Australia’s most significant and critically engaged artists. In a career lasting just over 25 years, Bennett produced an extraordinary and rich body of work exploring ideas connected to identity, knowledge, race and citizenship.
Binocular is a triptych belonging to a body of work that draws upon postmodern theory to think about images as visual texts, whose meaning can be deconstructed and interpreted differently according to their context. Each panel of the work depicts an archetypal European sculpture that Bennett has overlaid with a black grid and lines, referring to classical ideas of proportion and perspective.
In using this approach, Bennett considers how meaning is constructed and invites his viewer to apprehend the relationship between images and systems of knowledge.
Binocular can be viewed on Foyer Level.
