“I wanted to be photographed here with my horses because horses have always been a part of my life. They’ve carried our people, worked alongside us, and been part of our story for generations. There’s a trust between us – one that’s built with time, respect, and understanding. Out here, among the horses and the open land, this is where I belong”.
Damien Bond is a Wakka Wakka man whose life reflects strength, cultural pride, and deep connection to Country.
He serves as the Indigenous Development Officer for the National Rodeo Association, working to promote First Nations participation in rodeo sports. In 2023, he proposed building a barrel racing and rodeo training arena in Cherbourg – not just for competition, but as a way to keep local youth strong, focused, and connected.
Beyond the rodeo, Damien is an artist, mentor and cultural ambassador. He has danced with the Barambah Dancers, played didgeridoo at NAIDOC events, and helped mark major milestones like the Ration Shed Museum’s 10th anniversary. Whether he’s in the arena or the community, he moves with purpose – grounded in culture, shaped by responsibility, and always riding for something bigger than himself.
