Gideon Tjupurrula was born in the Gibson Desert at Pinarri, west of Kintore. The artist attended school for a while and then left to undergo initiation ceremonies in the Glen Helen area. He began to paint in 1976, not long after the Papunya Tula art movement was born at nearby Papunya. He learnt to paint by watching other artists, particularly Billy Stockman and Tim Leura.
A large group of Tingari ancestors are shown here on one of their creative journeys, from Mitukatjirri, south of Kintore, northwards to Pinarri, in the Gibson Desert.
The five concentric circles on the left of the painting are the Tingari campsites en-route. The central roundel is Mitukatjirri.
Tingari Men can be viewed in Plaza Gallery.
