The Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) has been awarded EarthCheck Master Certification, recognising a sustained commitment to environmental and social responsibility demonstrated through 15 consecutive years of independently audited performance.
The Legends Global managed venue underwent rigorous third-party assessment of environmental and social performance across operational systems, resource management, waste reduction, energy efficiency, cultural inclusion and staff training.
EarthCheck Certified is a science-based benchmarking and certification program used internationally by tourism and hospitality operators to measure and verify sustainability performance against evidence-based standards. Master is the highest level of EarthCheck certification and recognises organisations that demonstrate enduring leadership in environmental and social responsibility across their operations, culture and decision-making.
The certification identified four areas of best practice at BCEC: circular economy culture, cultural inclusion, continuous improvement, and staff awareness and training, and reflects the Centre’s ongoing commitment over many years to embedding environmental and social responsibility across operations, supported by employees who continue to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement.

Today, BCEC’s sustainability initiatives span resource recovery, food waste reduction, energy efficiency, cultural inclusion, community partnerships and staff engagement, demonstrating a whole-of-business approach to sustainability.
Sustainability outcomes are delivered through the collective efforts of teams across the organisation and guided by the Centre’s Corporate Social Responsibility Team, which champions initiatives and identifies opportunities for continuous improvement.
Sustainability & Community Engagement Coordinator Jodie Summers plays a key role in advancing environmental and social initiatives, working with teams to implement best practice, build community partnerships and drive positive outcomes.
Jodie said achieving Master Certification demonstrates the integration of sustainability into core operational processes.
“Strong sustainability outcomes are built through embedding environmental and social responsibility into systems and everyday decision-making,” Ms Summers said.
“This recognition reflects a sustained centre-wide effort to embed environmental and social responsibility into every aspect of our operations. The strongest outcomes are achieved when it’s woven into everyday decision-making rather than treated as an additional consideration.”

As EarthCheck’s highest level of certification, Master status is a significant milestone that places the Centre among a select group of convention centres globally and reinforces its leadership in responsible venue operations.
The certification also acknowledges the ongoing efforts of employees, past and present, who have helped shape the Centre’s approach to environmental and social responsibility, building a strong foundation for the work recognised today.
With Brisbane preparing to welcome the world for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Centre is well positioned to contribute to lasting outcomes for the city and its events sector through the same long-term focus that has underpinned its approach for more than a decade.
